Cole brace helps Newcastle beat Chelsea 4-2, 1994

On 10 September 1994 at St James' Park, Newcastle go five from five with a 4-2 win over Chelsea and equal their best start in eighty-six years, which is the sort of afternoon that ruins a Royal Antwerp scout's week.

Andy Cole reacts quicker than Jakob Kjeldbjerg to a lob from deep, lopes a few strides and crashes a left-footer top bins past Dmitri Kharin. Chelsea equalise when Dennis Wise's shot is followed in and poached by former Magpie, Gavin Peacock.

Steve Clarke concedes a soft penalty, judged to have pushed Cole. Kharin saves the penalty but the rebound is stroked home. Paul Furlong heads John Spencer's cross and the home keeper can only help it in off the underside of the bar. Just before half time, Dennis Wise sees red - the Chelsea midfielder is shown a second yellow for giving the linesman a piece of his mind.

Early in the second half, Newcastle go ahead after their penalty taker thumps home a low cross from the left. With twenty-five minutes to go, Cole combines with another midfielder and pokes the ball into the bottom right corner to make it 4-2. He could have had his hat trick later on, but hits the ball straight into the keepers arms when through on goal.

Kevin Keegan calls the opener a classic among two hundred and fifty since he arrived. Keegan goes home with Manager of the Month already in the pocket. Hoddle goes home wondering how you play well and still get thrashed.

Newcastle would remain unbeaten until the end of October and top of the league until early November, but unfortunately the toon army fall away and finish the season in 6th place.
