#651 Missing XI

On this day:Man United 3-3 Barcelona, 16 Sept 1998

On 16 September 1998 at Old Trafford, Manchester United and Barcelona share a 3-3 Champions League opener that drops two home points in a tight group, which is the sort of detail a takeover cheque cannot fix.

Playing in white because the visitors' away kit is orange, the hosts head in a deep far-post cross like a centre-forward, then an overhead kick is saved by Ruud Hesp, cannons off Luis Enrique, and is stabbed home for 2-0.

Two minutes after the restart Sonny Anderson pulls one back from a scramble in the box, Giovanni converts a penalty after Anderson goes down under a challenge, and a curling free-kick is whipped inside the post to restore the lead.

Substitute Nicky Butt handles in a goalmouth mess, sees red from Stefano Braschi, and Luis Enrique coolly equals it from the spot.

Louis van Gaal's side refuse to accept the script written for them. Alex Ferguson settles for a point. Braschi leaves with two penalties and a red card on his card.
